The village
History of Combloux
A traditional farming village turned village resort, Combloux is celebrating over 90 years of skiing. Its hamlets, Baroque chapels and onion-domed bell tower make it one of the most authentic villages in the Mont-Blanc country.
Origin of the name
The name Combloux first appears on a parchment from 1284, bearing a seal decorated with a wolf's head. Among the possible etymologies — Comba Loci, comblovium — the one generally accepted is 'cumba lupis': the Wolves' Combe.
A farming land
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the village had around a thousand inhabitants, the 'Comblorans'. As farming could not feed the whole population, many emigrated to Paris, notably to the Drouot auction house, a Savoyard stronghold. In 1942, Combloux had 134 farms; 26 are still working today, often run by farmers who also have a tourism-related job.
Balcony of Mont-Blanc
PLM posters displayed in major railway stations made the village famous with two memorable slogans: 'Combloux, balcony of Mont-Blanc' and 'Combloux, pearl of the Alps set among the glaciers'. The war halted this boom; the Grand Hôtel closed and was sold off as apartments in 1955. Combloux then took its destiny into its own hands — while remaining a lively, year-round village that has preserved its farming and developed its crafts.
Some landmarks
Located on the Roman road, then on the route linking Megève to Sallanches, and seat of the deanery around the year 1000, the village is thought to have been settled from the 12th century, when Benedictine monks from Megève cleared the land. Haute-Savoie has only been French since 1860, the year of the annexation: the territory previously belonged to the States of the House of Savoy.
The birth of the resort
Tourism began in the early 20th century with summer visitors, mainly British and American, who stayed at the Grand Hôtel du Mont-Blanc from 1912. Bought by the PLM railway company, enlarged and equipped with a golf course, tennis court and ice rink, the hotel attracted a wealthy clientele. Winter skiing took off after the 1924 Chamonix Olympic Games, and the first ski tow was installed by the PLM in December 1935.
